The Favicon

Something that tends to bother me are the finishing touches that so many great websites seem to neglect – the favicon. I know, it may seem trivial, but something trivial can actually make a huge difference to someone looking through a bunch of bookmarks. And it’s ridiculously easy to whip them up.
For the very lazy, bookmark this link into your Delicious account: http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/
It’s an online service allowing you to take an image and turn it into a favicon without having to use software on your computer or add a plug-in to Photoshop or some other messy business. And while we’re at it, we might as well put together an icon for the huge market of online browsers now using their iPhones and iPods to surf the web.
All you have to do for them is make an icon at 57×57 pixels and then save it as apple-touch-icon.png in the root folder of your server. Just make sure you have the following in the head of your doc so that both icons will work for sure:
<link rel=“SHORTCUT ICON” href=”myicon.ico” />
<link rel=“apple-touch-icon” href=”apple-touch-icon.png“/>
